5 Must-See Places in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is full of culture, beauty, and fun. It can be difficult to narrow down which places you want to see. So, the team at Target Rent A Car has put together a list of five must-see places for your next visit.

1. Mosquito Bay

Mosquito Bay, also known as Caño Hondo, is located on a small island off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico called Vieques. It glows a vivid blue at night thanks to tiny bioluminescent creatures. Mosquito Bay is by far the brightest of Puerto Rico's two main bioluminescent bays, Laguna Grande and La Parguera. It's the brightest on the entire planet, in fact.

2. Santurce

Santurce, the epicenter of San Juan's fantastic music and art sectors, is a hipster's dream come true. If you want to "hang with the cool kids," this is the spot to do it. The area is filled with murals, bars, and cafes. There are several dining options available here, and you can get useful knowledge from the locals. In our opinion, some of the greatest places to go are Tresbe, Berlingeri, and Pinky's Calle Loiza.

3. Old San Juan

Discovering restored structures from the Spanish colonial era from the 16th and 17th centuries is easy in this quaint old part of town. Enjoy a busy and colorful neighborhood while strolling through the winding cobblestone alleys that are rich in history, culture, and personality. It can, however, get a bit crowded with tourists, so ask the locals which spots are the best to avoid large groups.

4. Playa Flamenco

Isla Culebra's Playa Flamenco, located about 17 miles outside of Puerto Rico's city limits, is a snorkeler's paradise with white sand, crystal-clear water, and excellent snorkeling. It is routinely ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and one of Puerto Rico's best beaches.

5. La Ruta del Lechón

There is no better place to find authentic Puerto Rican cuisine than "La Ruta del Lechón," or literally, "The Pork Highway." A three-mile stretch of Highway 184 outside of the town of Guavate is lined with outdoor eateries that specialize in lechón, or whole, slow-roasted pigs. Oh, and La Ruta's wonderful food isn't its only draw; numerous eateries also provide dancing, drinking, and live music.
