What to Know Before Taking a Vacation in Puerto Rico

Interested in visiting Puerto Rico on your next vacation? We certainly think you should! The island offers a lot to explore with its rich, historic culture. Here are just a few things you should know before visiting Puerto Rico from the team at Target Rent A Car.

Rent a Car to Explore

Puerto Rico's public transportation system frequently falls short. Buses operated by Autoridad Metropolitana de Autobuses (AMA) provide service to the majority of the San Juan metropolitan area, which includes the municipalities of San Juan, Bayamón, and certain areas of Carolina. However, the routes and pick-up times are inconsistent. A rental car is necessary to travel outside of San Juan to the stunning central mountain range, the beaches in the northwest, or the southern desert.

No Passport Required

Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth of the United States even though it has its own government, customs, and laws that are distinct from those of the rest of the country. As a result, US citizens may enter without a passport or visa. Since flights from the US are regarded as domestic, you won't have to go through customs upon arrival and won't have to show a visa or pay a departure fee upon leaving. Visitors are still required to pay the 11.5% local sales tax on products and services, and before departing, you must go through the US Department of Agriculture channel at the airport to make sure you aren't bringing any fruits, vegetables, or unopened food packets back into the US.

Puerto Rico is Small but Mighty

Although Puerto Rico is only 100 miles long and 35 miles wide, the island's landscape is anything from modest. White, sandy beaches are just one of the natural treasures you'll get to see in Puerto Rico, which has a surface area of 3,515 sq miles. There are several rivers, canyons, high mountain peaks, salt flats, bioluminescent bays, and caves that are thousands of years old and decorated with Taino hieroglyphics.

With 11 locations throughout Puerto Rico, Target Rent A Car is sure to meet your needs. Even if you are traveling with a larger party, we offer minivan and passenger van rentals. You can contact us today at (787) 257-8452 to book a reservation.
